Jew-ffiti

It's been a fairly uneventful early January. Well, other than the oil drilling in the basement that I'm opting not to publicize here as a matter of self-preservation (I can send pics separately if anyone is interested - email me). That, combined with technical difficulties and a cold have kept me offline for a while. Since nothing is new, here's something odd, in the category of "things you just don't see very often": Jewish graffiti.

This was in the warehouse district in Orlando, while searching for citrus. Strange, no?

Brown Flowers

I actually did see a tree in bloom on Saturday, outside Harvard Square. Poor thing didn't realize it's January. However, I was driving my car so did not have a chance to capture. This is how the plants are supposed to look, if not frozen completely.

(Not that I'm complaining!)

Dead Lizard

There are a lot of lizards in Florida. This is what happens, apparently, when they are left on their own for a few months. What I don't understand is how this guy managed to die in an upright standing position. Scary, huh?

Buffet Still Lives

I found out on Saturday that the old Weylu's palace on Rt. 1 has been reopen for business for a couple of years, so had to drop what I was doing and drag some people there immediately (thanks, compadres). Still just as crazy inside as I remember if from the late 80s, though now with an expansive (and expensive) buffet option, containing abalone mushroom stir fry to...what Chinese food starts with a Z? well, if it exists, it probably was there. My advice: go for lunch (half the price) and skip the ginseng soup.

One of those things is not like the others...just because there's no such thing as too much sushi.

December beach grass

Too many silly pictures lately. It's time for some brown grass.

It's strangely pretty, edged with ocean and tide pools. Seriously, if we have any more 70 degree days this January, take a field trip up to Plum Island.

Jenga + Deviled Eggs

I'm a walking disaster. I just didn't see this coming. Seriously. A plate of deviled eggs, a jenga setup. I couldn't have orchestrated it more perfectly if I'd tried. Thanks, Justin, for this fabulous photo.

Fruity drinks and Fiestaware

Even in Orlando, an outdoor seat for lunch was to be found, with colorful fruity drinks and almost-matching Fiestaware plates.

Orange groves were more problematic. They've all but disappeared - as proven by a very long, fruitless hunt (get it? fruitless??) - since I first was there in March of 1999, when they were in full bloom and almost too fragrant. So sad.

The 2007 New Year's Miracle

Happy 2007.

We spent an extended weekend in Orlando, FL - which is as weird a place as ever, but beautifully pleasant in December, especially with a free place to stay. A wild night of partying it was not, considering we're verging on crotchety, though we did consume a respectable number of pina coladas and mojitos, and blew up a few small, festive explosives in the driveway.

The "miracle" of the evening occurred when we discovered at 11:53 that the TV had no reception, till Jeremy jiggered 2 unrelated cables and held them painfully together, by 11:58, so we could see the ball and know exactly when 2006 came to its ugly end. Yay!
