Beer Brewing

A team of beer brewers descended on my kitchen on Saturday. Kind of like canning, but more manly. My only "job" in the process involved taking pictures and drinking—in about 5 weeks.

Some raw materials:

Mmmm...wheat berries in brew-socks, steeping in hot water:

The team - Craig, Josh, Justin (and a low-hanging lightbulb):

Wet Kale

Honestly, I tried to find a picture that didn't involve plant life, since I think I'm in a bit of a rut, but couldn't find anything else recent that I liked enough to bother posting. So here's some kale, caught in the morning after a night of rain.

More leaves

So, like, it's autumn. I'm a bit focused presently on these wacky leaf colors.

These 2 pix are of the very large tree growing in Arlington center in front of the Unitarian Universalist church.

Yellow Fern

Who doesn't love a good fern?

Yeah, ok, I know, you don't love ferns.

Fernhater.

Fall Colors in Noanet Woods

A lovely warm, clear October New England weekend had us checking out the trails at the Noanet Woods in Dover. Bonus: I now know where Dover is.

A spotting of my favorite, the ubiquitous swamp maple (or sugar maple) leaves:

As noted in the wikipedia entry, it grows next to water:

Rooting

Just add water.

From left to right: spider plant, ivy and a wandering Jew (anyone know where the last one got that name? seems kind of un-PC, no?)

Korean Dogwood Fruit

So there's this tree outside my house with these funny-looking fruit. They taste pretty good, if you don't mind spitting out a mouthful of pits. Anyone know of anything useful that can be done with them?

Fishing Boat

Strange light. Fishing boat. That's Boston in the background, which I guess means that the air is clear, since I'm standing in Gloucester.

Dog Bar/YK

The annual trip to the Eastern Point lighthouse in Gloucester (aka Dog Bar) to cast away our many, collective sins, in the form of old bread, for a not-exactly-traditional Yom Kippur celebration.

The seagulls are now busy digesting those sins, I guess. Sorry, birds.

Riekje, Tatje + yogurt

Riekje, S.O. Robert, and adorable 14-month-old son, Tatje, grabbing some yogurt. They stopped by our place for a couple of nights, while on vacation in the US from Berlin. Riekje is my 2nd cousin 1x removed, we think (our fathers our first cousins), exactly my age. However, we'd only met once before due to the oceans separating us, both literal (Atlantic) and figurative (strict restrictions of the East German government, up till we were teenagers, anyhow), so it was fun to have this chance to reconnect.
